Board Policy
Board Policy recognizes the value of continuous tenure for members of the academic faculty who have performed at the level required for this privilege. Moreover, the Board also endorses and requires post-tenure review of academic faculty members in accordance with institutional accreditation requirements and concern for continuous improvement. The Board has delegated the authority to grant or deny applications for tenure to the institutional Presidents. To those ends, the Board has approved policies and procedures for the conferral of academic tenure and post-tenure review as incorporated into the Faculty Handbooks or manuals of the CSUS campuses, and retains the authority for final approval of all revisions to those policies and procedures. However, the Board has delegated to the campus Presidents the authority to implement those policies and procedures, subject only to Board appellate review of all dismissals of tenured and tenure-track faculty, as outlined in CSUS Policy 123.
Procedures
- Presidents submit proposed revisions to campus academic tenure policies and procedures, after consultation with faculty through shared governance processes, to the Academic and Student Affairs Committee for review and recommendation to the Board.
- Upon approval by the Board, Presidents promulgate approved revisions in the campus Faculty Handbooks.
