Search Process Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CSU System’s process for choosing a chancellor?

In a chancellor search, the Colorado State University System Board of Governors takes public action by voting to commence a national search, approve the position description and appoint a search committee and search committee chair. The committee is supported by members of the system office, with assistance, as needed, from certain staff at the campus level. The search committee is an advisory body that recommends final candidates to the Board. The chancellor is then appointed following a majority vote of the Board. The Board, under state statute, is vested with exclusive authority to appoint a CSU System chancellor.

Is this type of search common practice among multi-campus academic and research universities?

Yes. The Board is conducting the search in accordance with Colorado state statutes and board policies. There are no unique aspects related to this search.  The search committee meetings will be conducted under the Colorado Open Meetings laws allowing members of the CSU community to attend open meetings. Pursuant to the law, there will be certain parts of the meetings conducted in executive session.

How are the campuses and communities involved?

Prior to the start of the search process, the Board initiated a series of open “stakeholder” forums to solicit input from around the state (Pueblo, Sterling, Denver, Fort Collins, Durango, Grand Junction and Alamosa) concerning the desired attributes of a new chancellor. The stakeholder forums drew comments from students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, civic and business leaders from around the state. It was an inclusive process to glean input from the university’s many constituents.

What attributes and experience were identified as crucial in the next CSU System chancellor?

Please refer to the report that was issued by the co-chairs of the stakeholder forums. This report was presented to the Board of Governors on February 25, 2009. It contains all the comments expressed at the stakeholder input forums. These comments were considered in the development of the position description.

Who else is working on the CSU System chancellor search?

The search committee members are listed here. The search committee has a breadth and depth of high caliber individuals representing the campuses, alumni, donors, civic and business entities as well as the state. A few staff from the Board and System offices, including general counsel and human resources, are serving on the committee because of their respective knowledge and expertise. These individuals will be ex-officio members. The Board does not intend to retain a search firm to conduct the chancellor search, which can save the board up to $100,000.

Who pays for the search?

The CSU System will pay for the search.  The board does not plan to retain a search firm, which will save up to $100,000. The committee members are volunteering their time to serve in this capacity and staff time to support the committee is considered part of their current responsibilities. The board expects costs associated with the search process to be minimal.

When will a new chancellor be named?

The Board’s goal is to appoint a new chancellor by July 1, 2009. The Board understands this is an ambitious time frame for a position of this importance. Ultimately, the Board seeks to appoint a highly qualified and proven leader who can successfully take the CSU System to greatness. If this objective takes longer, the Board is committed to completing the search in the time necessary to achieve this outcome.
